2016 Movie Review ...

Each year on this day I've done a year end movie review.

I saw A LOT of movies this year. Fortunately for me, My wife is a movie lover like me. Finding a discount movie ticket source like DealFlicks also helped.

I have really enjoyed going to the movies this year. Obviously I'm not alone - this year was a record box office by almost DOUBLE!

Here's my top picks that I would recommend you see if you haven't

My number one pick for the year is:

Pete's Dragon. This is an outstanding family movie and I loved every bit of it and especially the message it had. I loved the design of the dragon and the companion children's book the movie promotes.

Second place goes to Star Wars: Rogue One ... this is one of the few movies that I've been to more than once while still in theaters in YEARS! It's true to the Star Wars movies and brings back Darth Vader. <- what's not to love about that?

Third place: Doctor Strange. Good story. Funny. Great acting - especially considering the material.

Honorable mentions:

Captain America: Civil War - probably best Marvel movie yet - mostly because it wasn't trying to top other movies in the comic universe.

Moana. Definitely not a Frozen but fun to watch

Deadpool. I think this movie was overrated and hyped mostly because it was cool to like it. I liked it though, coulda done with less rated R material.

Star Trek: Beyond. Seemed more like a great made for TV episode/installment but I liked it.

Suicide Squad. It was okay. Again, the hype/ the cool thing to do was like this movie. Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn was truly a breakout role for her though. The Enchantress scenes were laughable though.

Ghostbusters 3 (I liked it more than awful critic reviews it got)

Batman vs Superman: Dawn Of Justice

(Blah) I'm still in love with the Micheal Keaton Batman.

The Legend Of Tarzan. This was very entertaining. I'm not a fan of this story but I liked this movie a lot.

The Secret Life Of Pets. By far my biggest disappointment. Nearly all of this movies best moments you saw a thousand times in the previews.

Finding Dory. Another good entry for Pixar. Gets a thumbs up because of BEKKY! and "cute cuddly sad otter faces" <- you have to see the movie to know what I'm referring to.

The Jungle Book - amazing effects. Perfect plot. Great family movie.

Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them. - I liked it ok. Not a disappointment to Harry Potter fans.

Central Intelligence. Pretty funny. A little over the top.

Ms. Perigrene's Home For Peculiar Children. I loved this movie. I thought it was perfect Tim Burton directing and style.

Zootopia. Fantastic. Worthy of buying on DVD and rewatching annually.

Cloverfield Lane. Loved this movie as well. Great drama. Suspenseful.

Xmen: Apocalypse. An okay addition to the XMen universe.

Alice: Through The Looking Glass. Dissappoting

Snowden. Eye opening and highly recommended to watch.

2016 movies I missed but plan to see soon:

My throat is seized up after I ate steak ...

Since I couldn't find everything in one place (or at all) I have decided to share information and potential treatments for my condition. I cannot consume anti-caking agents such as Tri-Calcium Phosphate (synthetic MSG/anti caking) or Angus Beef MSG (a naturally occurring MSG / food protectant)

First, I want to make sure you understand that I am not a doctor. However, my experience is that most doctors do NOT take this seriously or have never experienced it so they may misdiagnose or mistreat the occurrence of DISPHAGIA (also spelled DYSPHAGIA) or difficulty swallowing due to swelling/inflammation of the esophagus.

I have been thoroughly tested for this phenomenon as it relates to Tri Calcium Phosphate as it pertains to MY issue.

To describe it as an allergic reaction maybe inaccurate. It may actually be termed as a non-immunological food reaction. It could also be termed as Phlarangial Edema - although typically I can breath after I have a flare up.

In 2009, I was tested with drops of the following Monosodium Glutamate samples:

Red Fish (2 types)
White Fish (2 types)
Shell Fish
Vegetable (8 types)
Pork (2 types)
Beef (2 types)
Chicken / Bird (4 types)

For me, 1 type of the naturally occurring substance found in Angus beef triggered my issue violently. My throat did not act favorably to Venison.

Some ways to treat the issues of nausea, vomiting, hiccupping, dehydration, inability to swallow (even your own saliva/ spit) ....

• Place a wet wash cloth in your mouth and gently "suck" the water from it

• Use Phenergan suppositories (maximum dosage is 25mg every 7-8 hours)
Do not use on children under 5 (notes say 2 but this would be too serious of a condition for someone under 18, I believe)

• place Vicks / Mentholatum under nose and on throat

• try to eat ice chips

• try to sip gently on a non dyed energy drink.

• sip gently on Claussen brand pickle juice

• sip gently on pickled beet juice

• sip gently on benedryl or it's generic equivalent (I like to use kids strength)

•I have a spit cup beside me to spit in ( I put lavender oil or lavender soap shavings in the bottom to keep the smell down / calm / soothe)

• I have found Pepcid to the most affective antacid.

Second Disclaimer: I am not a doctor. I do not even to pretend to be giving sound advice here. This is what I've done and works for me.

I hate that I've had this more than once in my life. As of (while I type) this is my 6th time having this throat issue. 3 times required ER trips.

Who's on soup?

Here's a funny story from my journal on this day July 7, 2006 ...

So I go with [a friend] to Four Chefs restaurant tonight ...

I love all of the food there; particularly their soups. I have to order a cup, no matter what kind they're serving. The menu says

"Soup Du Jour $1.99 cup / $3.49 bowl"

A new, first hour on the job waitress comes up to our table and I order a French Dip sandwich and ask ...

"What is your soup for today?"

Waitress: "Soup Du Jour"

Me: "I know, but what is it?"

Waitress: "Soup Du Jour, it's really good."

Me: "I LOVE your soups but what kind of soup is served today?"

Waitress: "It's called soup du jour it's like a creamy corn chowder"

Me: "Ah, ok, it's corn chowder."

Waitress: "Well, they call it soup du jour here. I always called it corn chowder. My grandma used to make the best."

(I gave up at this point trying to argue or understand)

We laughed at the table for a bit.

One of the chefs came out with our soup ...

Chef: "Here's your soup of the day, it's chicken corn chowder. I'm sorry, but you were our new waitress's first customer and I guess I just assumed she knew that we changed our soup of the day."

Me: "We were like who's on first there for a while - I felt like Costello saying, "I know it's soup du jour Abbott, but what kind is it?"

I left her a cash tip of 25%

In the field on the credit card receipt I put

"     See your cash
___du jour on table___"

"You can't say that you don't either."

This is the side of Jim Henson that few knew ...

Love these Wilkins Coffee commercials:
