Another benefit to that 70/30 split ...

A few days back I discussed the 70/30 iTunes Applications split that Apple will be giving. One of the questions raised in the comments was that the split was unfair because most of the iPhone App developers would be Mac Developers and that they already had the hosting and credit card processing taken care of.

Another benefit I thought of is;

What Mac developers have gift cards to their website in over 100,000 store locations worldwide? Any developer? Any store?

I personally have a lot of iTunes store credit that has been gifted to me and that I obtained at a very steep discount when a few Radio Shack locations closed doors locally.

just curious where the 100,000 store figure came from? that's an interesting statistic. do you know how many US stores?

it should be pointed out that apple's app store is US only right now. so all international developers are currently shut out of selling apps for the iphone.

I guesstimated ...

Apple Stores, AT&T stores, Walmart, Target, CVS, Best Buy, Circuit City, Radio Shack, Walgreens, Sears/Kmart, Frys, Microcenter, most large gas station chains - just that adds up to more than 75,000 locations in the US. Even Macys sold iTunes gift cards this past Christmas.

OK, I thought you had a source not just a guess. I know a lot of grocery stores sell them as well. I was curious for another reason. BTW, Fry's only sells their own gift cards.

The Fry's in Atlanta sells them at the register. The 75,000 I gave you is accurate ... based on those websites information about number of store locations the total is 76144. As you pointed out ... All publix stores have them I know ... So add 264 to that total, all of my local BiLo stores have them as well. I'm almost positive the total is over 100,000 ( and I believe I've heard Steve Jobs say it) ... the Apple shareholders meeting would be a good place to get a near exact figure. I'll follow up with a call to Apple to get an exact total.

Yah, I believe over 100k is accurate. It could be 250k or more maybe. I'm very curious if you can get a close to exact figure. Several grocery store chains around here have them and most drug stores. Its a lot of places. Fry's has around 20 locations though, so that's barely a drop in a bucket. At least the Fry's I've been to in California (most of them actually) don't have gift cards except for the Fry's gift card. I'm at a Fry's just about every weekend.

I put in a call to someone I know at Apple and they said they'd get back to me asap sithbsn answer ... I merely pointed to Fry's because I couldn't point to compusa any more ... but I did add all the store locations from the store chains I listed and came to more than 76000. I wouldn't go as far as 250,000 but I can say with a lit of confidence 100,000 + ... I'll post the answer on the front page by Friday.
