Macs Don't Get Viruses!

A friend of mine received an interesting piece of SPAM this past weekend:

The title of this email is Macs Don't Get Viruses? THINK AGAIN!

To which viruses is Intego referencing here? They aren't. No where in this email does it discuss a virus that has hit the Mac platform. The funny thing is ... whenever some sort of "virus scare" comes out for the Mac ... Intego and Norton always issue an update to "potentially combat it" ... meaning their software didn't protect you (if there was a real threat).

See the previous FYT story:

Mac Fanatics Cause iVirus

even if Macs did get viruses, having Anti-Virus software is 100 times more dangerous, as happened the last false report of a virus went out, and one of the anti-V companies put out an update that actually trashed Mac users important Disk files...

the only Virus Mac users have to worry about is the FUD being spread around by these Virus companies, who probably are the ones creating the false reports of threats...

I also ask which viruses is Intego referencing to?

Virus companies putting stuff out after the fact. It's like protection for my yard but giving me poles only. After everyones in my yard then bring a fence, then smaller meshes for that fence, then patch my fence you sold me.

Your protection always a step behind, while my cash has to be a step ahead.

I'm afraid it sounds rather FUDish to me, granted I've never gotten a viri on either my Mac or my Winblows machines. With WinXPSP2 and OSX I really don't feel all that threatened, but then again I'm not a typical Winblows user.

Here's a good example:

It's like weed killer for my $200 per sq ft sod yard I had installed last week.

well for 1, macs are built on unix witch is much stable and less prone to viruses than windows. 2, only about 4% of the worlds hackers use macs. 3, only about 2% of the 5% of mac users use the safari web browser to create the viruses. IE is the easiest. that equals less than 1% of the worlds hackers that create viruses that can attack macs.
